Road safety authorities have launched a national campaign aimed at cutting fatalities on Zambia’s busiest freight corridors, with heavy commercial vehicles at the centre of the programme.
The campaign combines enforcement, driver training and public awareness. Regulators will increase roadside inspections along the Great North Road and the Kasumbalesa corridor, while operators have committed to fatigue-management practices and journey planning that keeps drivers off the road during the highest-risk hours.
Industry associations describe the approach as a shift from penalties to prevention. Rather than treating safety as a compliance cost, participating fleets are being asked to report near misses, review scheduling pressure and invest in driver welfare at rest points along the route.
What operators need to prepare for
Fleets operating cross-border services should expect documentation checks to tighten alongside vehicle inspections. Operators who already run telematics will find much of the required evidence — hours behind the wheel, speed profiles, braking events — is data they collect today but rarely review as a safety record.
